I am a fourth-generation Colorado resident with deep roots in the horse community. That community is a family, especially as I often work as a saddle fitter with multiple generations of equestrian clients.
Some know that I was born with a congenital hip and knee disorder that made childhood motor skills difficult to impossible. I was in a full cast from infancy to three years old and a case study through Children’s Hospital in Denver. My wonderful parents relented to my instant attraction to horses and got me on horses before I could walk. The horses became my legs. They became my ability to be mobile. They became my strength. As I have undergone a multitude of surgeries throughout my life, the horses I have encountered have given me a lifetime of joy. I owe them gratitude, each one of them.
Riding bareback, then western in a mounted drill team and backcountry riding, I eventually found English riding to be more comfortable for my uniquely shaped hips and knees. Classical dressage was mentally and physically a good fit and with my access to many excellent instructors, I pursued that education in my riding. My diverse horses taught me along the way. English tack, especially saddles, was scarce in Colorado. In 1997, I had the opportunity to step away from my career in Environmental Science and begin an encore profession as a saddler with my business, The Tack Collection in Lafayette, Colorado. I felt I needed a proper education to be a true saddle fitter as opposed to a saddle salesman. It was impossible to adequately learn about saddle fitting in the United States when I started, so I petitioned the Society of Master Saddlers in the United Kingdom. They accepted me into their first class for Overseas Fitters in July 2000. That became my basis, my educational roots, and from that I have added classwork from the UK and the US. My primary objective as a saddler is to keep horses comfortable in their work and keep riders safe and effective. My primary objective in my career path is to pass on the knowledge that I have accumulated. I hope to be successful in that through my illustrated book on saddle fitting, through clinics, and with select apprentices.
I am a life-long artist and am driven to create in many types of media. Water media has been my favorite because of its spontaneity and ease of use when traveling. I naturally gravitate to horses as a subject matter and meander through other animals, landscape, still-life and abstract.
